FAQ

Practical information for finding, entering and taking part in Weaving 2026

01 / The basicsWhat is Congress?+

Organised for students, by students, the Australasian Student Architecture Congress (ASAC) is a biennial event that has bounced around Australia, Aotearoa and Papua New Guinea since the 1960s. It dates back specifically — at least we think — to 1963, when some New Zealand students invited Aldo van Eyck to Auckland to talk about the Social Aspects of New Housing. An organised mass gathering of architecture students has happened somewhere around New Zealand or Australia, usually every two years, ever since. ASAC is a unique non-institutionalised entity that supports students’ shared experience, learning and exchange in the region of Oceania, and carries with it a diverse network of past and present practitioners, protagonists and organisers. Congress always relies on the promise of the next one: pitch day means there is an opportunity to propose your city to host in another two years’ time. We see congress as a place where students, recent graduates, architecture workers and practitioners of all kinds realise their agency — a space to connect, collaborate and imagine what, how and where architecture is in the future.

02 / The 2026 themeWhat is Weaving?+

Weaving is a cross-cultural phenomenon, a practice shared by all peoples. Weaving 2026 recognises and responds to this ancient communal practice and positions it as a framework for a collective and connected architecture discipline. The congress expands weaving through five themes: place, space, connections, knowledge; and a final theme directed to participants, the binding thread and leading to questions beyond the congress: futures. The six-day programme — shaped by these themes — includes a conference day with local and international speakers, tours by local guides and practitioners, and a two-day festival of more talks, workshops, music, shared meals and exchange of knowledge, in place, together.

03 / DatesWhen is Weaving 2026?+

Monday 30 November to Saturday 5 December 2026.

04 / LocationWhere will Weaving 2026 be?+

Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, New Zealand. Congress moves around the isthmus between our two harbours, the Waitematā and the Manukau. As an introduction to the city, day 1 visits various locations for tours and workshops. Day 2 crosses to the north of the Waitematā for a day of talks in AUT’s Tukutuku Building, AUT North Campus. Two further days of workshops, activities, talks and experiences happen together in a landscape setting at Riverhaven Artland near Clevedon, just beyond the southern extents of the city. Finally we return to the central city on day 5 to party and pitch, and find out where congress will be next.

05 / ProgrammeWhat is the schedule?+

Check the schedule on this site, and keep track of @weaving_2026 on Instagram for official and up-to-date schedule information.

06 / AccommodationWhere should I stay?+

In the spirit of congress we encourage billeting with locals at home — if you are local and keen to host, or travelling and want to stay with a local, join the WhatsApp group. We recommend staying in the city centre or inner suburbs for 30 November and 1—2 December; further out, suburbs along the east–west line are well placed for a short train ride into town. Accommodation as camping or communal sleeping is included for 3—4 December, but bring your own gear if you can. We return to the city on 5 December, and you will need to sort accommodation beyond that date. Discounts are available at LYLO Auckland Central.

07 / Days 3—4What camping gear do I need?+

At a minimum: a tent, sleeping bag, camp mattress and pillow. It will be summer, but the weather can be changeable. If you would rather not tent, communal sleeping space is available and comfortable in an old apple shed with converted living spaces. Facilities including showers and toilets are on site.

08 / Days 3—4What if I can’t bring or don’t own camping gear?+

Get in touch. We will try to connect you with someone who can loan you gear for the week.

09 / AccessI have accessibility needs, or can’t camp+

A bus runs to and from AUT’s North Campus, Tukutuku Building, on day 2. On other days transport is mostly walking and public transport — get in touch if you need more information or assistance. There is transport to and from Riverhaven each morning and evening on days 3 and 4, so we can accommodate people who would rather stay in the city on those nights. The Riverhaven site is reasonably flat, but it is outdoors and on grassy, sometimes uneven terrain. Get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate accessibility needs.
